Scleral lenses are a highly effective solution for many vision and eye health issues, providing comfort and clear vision. Proper insertion and care are essential to maximize the benefits of scleral lenses and ensure the health of your eyes. At Yealy Eye Care, we provide comprehensive guidance on how to correctly insert and care for your scleral lenses.
How to Insert Scleral Lenses
- Wash Your Hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling your scleral lenses. Dry your hands with a lint-free towel to avoid transferring any debris to the lenses.
- Prepare the Lens: Place the scleral lens on the insertion tool (plunger) with the bowl side facing up. Fill the lens with a non-preserved saline solution to ensure that there are no air bubbles.
- Position the Lens: Hold the insertion tool with the lens directly in front of your eye. Use a mirror to help guide the lens into place. Keep your eye wide open by holding your upper and lower eyelids apart with your other hand.
- Insert the Lens: Slowly and gently bring the lens toward your eye. Keep your gaze steady on the center of the lens as you place it directly on the cornea. Once the lens is in place, release your eyelids and blink a few times to settle the lens.
- Check for Comfort: Ensure the lens feels comfortable and there are no air bubbles trapped underneath. If the lens is not comfortable or you notice bubbles, remove the lens, rinse it, and try inserting it again.
How to Remove Scleral Lenses
- Wash Your Hands: Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before removing your scleral lenses.
- Use the Removal Tool: Moisten the removal tool (plunger) and position it on the lower third of the lens. Apply gentle pressure to create a suction, and then carefully lift the lens away from your eye.
- Handle with Care: Place the lens in the palm of your hand and rinse it with saline solution. Avoid using tap water as it can contain harmful microorganisms.
