Regular eye exams are crucial for children as their eyes are constantly developing. Early detection of vision issues can prevent long-term problems and support your child's learning and development. Many vision problems do not exhibit obvious symptoms, making routine exams essential for identifying any issues early.

According to the American Optometric Association (AOA) children should have their eyes examined by an eye doctor at 6 months, 3 years, at the start of school, and then at least every 2 years following.

Eye Exams in Preschool Children: 2-5

Early childhood is a critical period for visual development. During these formative years, regular eye exams can help detect and correct vision problems that could impact learning and development.

Parents should also be aware of any developmental delays having to do with object, number, or letter recognition, color recognition, or coordination, as the root of such problems can often be visual. If you notice your child squinting, rubbing his eyes frequently, sitting very close to the TV or reading material, or generally avoiding activities such as puzzles or coloring, it is worth a trip to the eye doctor.

Eye Exams in School-Aged Children: Ages 6-18

As children grow, their visual demands increase, especially with the rise of digital device usage and school activities. Regular eye exams ensure their vision remains clear and healthy, supporting academic success and overall well-being.

Children who have problems with focusing, reading, teaming their eyes, or hand-eye coordination will often experience frustration and may exhibit behavioral problems as well.

Signs of vision problems in older children include:

    • Short attention span
    • Headaches
    • Frequent blinking
    • Avoiding reading
    • Tilting the head to one side
    • Losing their place often while reading
    • Double vision
    • Poor reading comprehension

Our pediatric eye exams are tailored to suit the needs of children of all ages, from infants to teenagers. Here's what you can expect during your child's visit:

Comprehensive Vision Testing:

We conduct a series of tests to assess your child's visual acuity, eye alignment, depth perception, and color vision. These tests help us determine if your child needs corrective lenses or other treatments.

Eye Health Evaluation:

Our optometrists thoroughly examine your child's eyes to check for signs of common childhood eye conditions, such as amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (crossed eyes), and refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism).

Age-Appropriate Techniques:

We use age-appropriate techniques and equipment to make the exam comfortable and engaging for your child. Our team is experienced in working with children and knows how to create a positive and stress-free experience.

Educational Guidance:

We provide guidance and tips for parents on how to support their child's eye health. This includes information on proper visual habits, the importance of protective eyewear, and managing screen time
